Basketball Shoe & Shoe Lace..

A few months before I came to Adelaide, I met an akh from UK. He dropped by KBU (Kolej Bndr Utama, where I had my foundation year).

One afternoon, we were playing basketball together. Me and his 'usrah'mates from UK as well. When we're on our way to the basketball court, I saw his basketball shoe. Still shiny and still have that 'bau kedai'. If I'm not mistaken, the model was Hyperfuse (It was expensive at that time. Around RM300-400. Only 'tokey emas' can buy that).

So, we had a little conversation. Me and him....

Me   :  Wow, that pair of shoe looks new. I looked at the review and it has good performance too.

Akh  :  Oh, this shoe... ? This is a little bit special compared to any I had before.

Me   :  Oh, why's that? (puzzled)

Akh  :  You see those guys? (pointing towards his 'usrah'mates, walking down the road to the court).

Me   :  Yeah...

Akh  :  Yup, those guys bought it for me. (^^)

Me   :  (O.o) (*speechless!)

Akh  :  Ukhuwwah values more than this. It's not about the shoe, it's about the willingness to sacrifice some of the things that you loved, to someone that you care for the sake of Allah.

I looked down, looking at my run-down basketball shoe (not that I want a new one, haha). Looking at my shoe lace.

Ukhuwwah is indeed like a shoe lace, while Islam is like the shoe. With a carefully tied shoe lace, you can walk with the shoe, in fact, run with it without falling down. No problem at all. This Deen of Islam can soar as high as it can get. The Ustaziatul Alam (Islam as the world's 'trend-setter') that we've ever dreamed of.

But if it is untied, forget running, walking too can make you fall and bleed. Each end of the shoe lace have its role to play. You can't tie your shoe just with one end of the shoe lace, right? So, value it before the shoe can no more be used. Isn't ukhuwwah is one of the core of this Ummah? Take good care of it, will ya~

Look to the sky!

The Pillars of Creation... located 7000 light years away from our solar system. Fascinating dust formation in our very own home galaxy, the Milky Way. Personally, it is outstanding. A miracle. When I first looked at it in a TV show on YouTube, Journey to the Edge of the Universe, I was in awe... Amazed by Allah's creation. But what captivated me most was that, the size of each pillars is as huge as our solar system. Allahu Akbar..

Recently, I've sort of developed a deep interest in the universe, planets, galaxies, and all that stuff (but psychology is still at the top of the list, hehe). It just really fascinates me to know what's out there in the deep space where there are so many unknown stuff and miracles going on. And when we talk about outer space and universe, it's all about mystery, it's about violent explosions, massive objects, expansion of the universe in a trillionth of a second, as well extreme temperatures and climate that goes way beyond our mind could ever think of. It's just amazing. I just couldn't describe it with words other than SubhanAllah!

And not too long ago, I purchased this book on eBay called Parallel Words by a famous theoretical physicist named Michio Kaku. You know, just to satisfy my burning desire to know more about this world and this universe. I haven't read that much and so far it talks about the String theory, M-Theory and all that space-related theories which I thought were really cool. One of the theories was the 'Inflationary universe theory' which said that in the first trillionth of a trillionth of a second, a mysterious antigravity force cause the universe to expand faster than the speed of light with an unimaginable explosion. Within a fraction of a second, the universe expanded by an unimaginable factor 10^50. Which is just.... WOW! The only thing that I could say is 'SubhanAllah' and even more 'SubhanAllah'.

Other than what I've mentioned above, the thing about outer space, galaxies and all these cosmic stuff gives me a kind of a feeling that I've never really felt it significantly. I felt so small and so weak every time I look up to the sky and all of His creations in outer space. Seeing all those gigantic planets, ever expanding universe just kept me thinking of how Allah is the sole Almighty and none equates Him. For example, just look at Jupiter. The planet itself is far huge compare to the earth and on the surface of Jupiter, it has what it calls the Red Spot, a super-violent tornado which can fit in 50 of our home planet, Earth. The tornado itself has a gust  that could tear meat from the bones which is very very violent. Another example would be Quasar. This creation is by far the most massive and violent explosion ever discovered and it has a mass of 2 billion times far greater than the Sun. Again.. Allahu akbar!

Quasar

The Great Red Spot

Now I sort of understand, why Allah keeps asking us to look up to the sky to search for His signs. One of the many verses that Allah mentioned us to look up to the sky is in Surah Al-Mulk..

"[And] who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you not see any breaks? Then return [your] vision twice again. [Your] vision will return to you humbled while it is fatigued."

(Al - Mulk:3-4)

That's what I really see after looking and learning about what's up there. I see perfection. I see the mighty power of Allah. As I know more, as more discoveries have been made, I feel smaller and smaller. Outer space, the universe, planets, that's what I used and looked at to make me feel small and weak.

Well, in the old days, I might have been amazed about it because of academic, science, or physics purposes. But as I go on with my life and going through tarbiah, I view it differently. It is more towards the heart rather the brain. And I'm so grateful and thankful to Allah for allowing me to stay in this tarbiah route. It makes me see everything around me with the correct perspective. The perspective that Allah wants us all to see.  And again, all these cosmic things out there just makes me feel that I'm no one in this world.

Me in this ever-expanding universe, is just like a water molecule in a wide ocean. Tiny...very tiny and yet, still as cocky as if you were so big and could survive without Allah. O Allah please forgive your servant.

Amin~

p/s : oh, please watch Journey to the Edge of  the Universe on YouTube. Prepare to be amazed! (^_^)

"Warning" from Mr Researcher

It was just this morning...

I had to participate in one research for my Research Methods in Psychology's research participation.

And yup, it was held in School of Psychology..

And this is how some of the corridor looks like ~

Couldn't psycho you enough... erghh~

Anyhow, today's entry is not about the 'psycho' corridor nor the the subject.

It's something that I learned implicitly from the research participation.

During the research, we had to do a few sets of questionnaires and some kind of time inspection test.

For doing such effortless work, you get rewarded 5% for your final mark.

(I do feel dizzy after the test... woo~)

And, I was the last one to complete the study and I just thought I would just have some chat with the researcher, which I forgot his name..

Sorry Mr Researcher...! (>_<)

So, dialogue between me and him goes like this...

Me                  : You get 5% for completing this task, huh?

Researcher      :  Yeah, such effortless thing to do. And you know what? There are still students who
                          doesn't want to participate. That's a reward.

Me                  : For real? That's too bad. You easily get 5% for it.

Researcher      : Yeah. Anyway, grab a Chupa Chups. Thanks for participating.

Me                  : No worries. I did what I had to do.

Yup, I did get a free Chupa Chups lollipop for participating.

Anyway, after I stepped out of the computer lab. Something struck me

It's the same isn't it?

Like how Allah and our Prophet SAW call us for..

Both Allah and Prophet Muhammad SAW promise us goodness and rewards in this world and hereafter.

But we avoid THEIR call....

We avoid this Deen of Islam....

We avoid the Qur'an....

We avoid the musolla...

We avoid the masjid....

We avoid to give our money for charity....

When all this while, Allah and Prophet Muhammad SAW had promised us such goodness if we follow those things that we've avoided...

We follow our nafs too much. Desiring temporary pleasure too much which gives us no good in the hereafter.

We are no different than those students who wants to relax at home and not get reward for their finals...

Or to put into context...

We are just DUMBS who wants this worldly pleasure and get ourselves thrown in the Hellfire in the hereafter...

....SNAP*

Thanks for the reminder Mr Researcher   \ (^0^) /

It was easier for me to approach the Non-Muslim...

Alhamdulillah, we have just finished the Islam Awareness Week, here held in University of Adelaide.

*yeiyyy~ \ (^o^) /

I would say it was pretty a 'BOMB'.. haha

I mean, yes, definitely many Muslims come.

But, surprisingly, the not-yet-Muslims also came in.

I've seen some of them came two days in a row.

Some came in because they were invited by the volunteers.

However, there are also some not-yet-Muslims came with their own will.

They were sort of like searching for his purpose of life.

There are also, some of them were searching for answers

As well, to get to know Islam more about it.

Well, as you can see in these two posters, there are many great stuffs going on throughout the awareness week.

(^o^)v

Personally, it is not just an awareness week for the others....

But for the muslims as well.

Especially during a session with the reverts.

We looked at how their struggle to find Islam and to live as a Muslim within a non-Muslim family.

And they have shown how they appreciated Islam so much and how it was the most beautiful thing that had ever happened in their life.

(I had teary eyes during this session :P )

And one of them were saying that during solat is the most peaceful and relaxing moment.

Never had anything else provide such comfort to them besides solat.

It's the ultimate relaxing, comforting and peaceful moments in life.

As a born muslim, we tend to be too comfortable with our status as muslim.

To some extent, we don't even appreciate this Deen.

We don't even feel that it is the greatest gift from Allah to us.

Whereas this new reverts, I can see how they really appreciate this Deen compare to their own life.

And I would dare say, if Salahuddin Al-Ayubi were to choose his army during this era.

He would definitely go for the new reverts.

Shame on us, born Muslims. May Allah guides us :)

And another great findings and my personal thought as well

I tend to think, not-yet-Muslims are more eager to talk about Islam.

They are willing to know, willing to learn.

Than some Muslims I have encountered.

Hmm... why? Shouldn't Muslims itself be interested in their own religion?

What could have gone wrong.

I remember talking to some Japanese, their names are Yoshiki, Yusuke, Taro and Keiko

I did start the conversation with Japanese language.

And from there, they are more open to converse with me. They see a very small barrier between me and them.

Well, I think that is the ultimate benefits for me to learn Japanese. \ (^o^) /

When we talk in their language, they are more fond of us and more upon towards us.

Then it makes me easier to talk to them about Islam.

Eventhough they are not familiar with Islam (most Japanese are), but they are willing to hear.

And they admit, it was a new concept to them and it was hard to grab it.

Especially, since they were born as an atheist.

However, surprisingly, after I have strongly encouraged them

They actually went to the awareness week and got them a copy of tranlated Quran.

They want to know more.

They want to know who is this One God called Allah.

アッラーはどなたですか? (Who is Allah)

May Allah guide them.. (^^)

that's Yoshiki with my 'brother' Zul, who gave him the translated Quran. (^-^)

Looking back...

Into my Muslim friends

Let me take an example, when I said politely that you shouldn't go out on a date before marriage.

You know what they say???

"Man... mind your own business. I know what I'm doing. You're just jealous."

Or when I asked, Let's go to Usrah..

"That's boring stuff... I already know those things."

We give excuses and avoid being closer to Allah.

We feel awkward and strange when we talk about Islam and getting closer to Allah in everyday life.

As if it was only meant to be spoken during Tazkirah and in Masjid ONLY.

WHY???

Looking back into Malaysia...

People are going away from Islam, whereas in Australia.. people are coming to Islam

Why?

Because they see happiness and solutions in it.

They realize that...

"YES....THIS IS THE MANUAL OF LIFE THAT I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR.

YES....THIS IS THE MISSING PART THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.

YES....THIS IS THE HAPPY LIFE THAT I WANT.

YES....THIS IS THE PATH GOD WANTS ME TO TAKE."

Let's just take some time out and ponder into this matter, my brothers and sisters in Islam.

What is actually wrong with us?

*If you feel that my words have slapped you really hard, then, don't worry. It was meant to be that way. I was slapped earlier, so I want to slap you guys damn hard as well. hehe :)

What Tomita-Sensei said...

Eid Mubarak everyone.... (^o^)v

It has been a few days since Ramadan left us. Hope this year's Ramadan was a recharging month for our Iman, Insya Allah :)

Well, I know it is pretty late to talk about Ramadan (for some people), since it is almost a week ago Ramadan ends.

But I do feel a strong urge to write about this.

Two weeks before Eid (if I'm not mistaken..haha), I met Tomita-Sensei...

She's my Japanese Language lecturer here in University of Adelaide..

Her full name is Akiko Tomita, from Aomori, Japan. She's my favourite lecturer, I suppose.

Funny, interesting and always active in class, which eventually make the class atmosphere a lively one.. haha.

Yup, that's the picture of Tomita Akiko - Sensei in her office.

I come to her office every once in a while. Have a chat and gave her some 'kuih raya'. She like pineapple tart so much. hehehe.  She even asked me to come to her office often.

Her reason was, "Since I'm not teaching you this semester, we won't met each other much. So, do come to my office often." (^_^)

And today, she invited me to have lunch with her. Wow!  (^o^)v

すみません、富田先生。私はもう昼ごはんを食べました。

(Sorry Tomita-Sensei. I already had my lunch) :)

So, on that particular day, I came by to her office....

And we talked about lots of stuff..

I unintentionally (I think out of curiosity), I asked about religions in Japan.

Well, there are some, like Buddhism and Shinto. But she said, most Japanese don't really have any religion.

They don't really believe in God.. and Tomita-Sensei claimed herself as someone who is not religious.

She don't really pray, here in Adelaide. But when she go back to Japan, she do pray. But to both Shinto God and Buddha God.

When I listened to her... I nodded, but at the same time, I just feel strange hearing about her way of looking at religion.

I think it's more cultural stuff, I suppose.

Then, she asked about Ramadan...

Wow! I'm surprised she knows about it... One thing I can conclude, Islam is definitely growing there.

Yeiiyy!!! :D

がんばります。。日本であにき、(Keep working hard, brothers in Japan) ;)

So.....

I told her pretty much what are the do's and dont's during Ramadan...

And...

She was SURPRISED and SHOCKED when I said that we can't eat or drink at all from dawn till dusk.

She was even MORE surprised and amazed when I say that we don't fast on certain foods or drinks like most other religion does.

She said in despair, "I don't know if I can take it or not because I love food and I love to eat so much."

Haha... But, then I said you will eventually get used to it

And that sort of clarified something for her...

She said in an amazed and praising tone, "No wonder Muslim people are so strong, calm and discipline. Because you had to go through a very hard 1 month.ムスリムはすごいですよ、

(Muslim is amazing.)

Well, that's not what I said. That's what Tomita-Sensei said. A shout out to all Muslim, I suppose.

Don't you guys feel lucky about it?

Don't you guys feel that during Ramadan, it trains you to be disciplined, calm and strong.

Allahuakbar. Indeed Allah is All knowing. You may think fasting is tiring when in fact there are greater benefits behind it. (2:216)

Indeed, what Allah had said in the Qur'an :

"O ye who believe, it has been made obligatory for you to fast just like the people before you, so that you will achieve Taqwa"
(2:183)

Last word, May Allah grant you His light, Tomita-Sensei... Amiiinn~ :)

"FASTBREAK" for Lailatul Qadr

What is the significant between Basketball and Lailatul Qadr???

Well, not that significant, I suppose. But there is... in a way.

Did you just asked 'How'? Well, isn't the hunt for Lailatul Qadr requires you to wake up 1/3 of every night and start making du'a to ask for forgiveness and other stuff?

Well, that IS significant, isn't it? Being better at basketball, not only because of your training, but it's because of whether Allah wills it or not.

No matter how much you've trained, if Allah do not wills it, then you won't be better in basketball.

As a Muslim, it's important to know that, "There is no other will and strength other than the help of Allah" (lahawlawala quwwata illa billah).

So, get up, make du'a.

If you desire to be better in basketball. You have to wake up at night, pray and make du'a to Allah cos He is closer to you at this very moment. If it hits Lailatul Qadr, than that's really great.

Cos you'll be in NBA in no time, hehehe.

What's wrong with just working out and doing drills?

That's the thing isn't it? That's the common mentality that WE, people who wants to improve their game have.

WE TEND TO FORGET ALLAH IN THIS MATTER!

WHY?! Wallah He is the One and only who provides you your dribbling, your crossover, your shooting and your quickness to drive to the basket.

We tend to forget the One who gave it to us.

It's a gift from Allah to make you a Qudwah to other people out there.

Let's look at a situation.....

When you give presents or gifts to someone, I bet you'll love the person more, than the gift itself, don't you agree with me?

The same goes to basketball skills.

It is gift to you from Allah. BY RIGHT, you should love Him more than basketball.

That's the way to go about it.

We should believe that these skills and attributes come from Allah.

Just asking from Allah alone, is not enough..

Yeah, so damn true. You have to work for it. You have to work on your game.

Allah wants to see your effort in this.

You got no effort, you got no game.

Cos if you do wake up at night and start praying and search for Lailatul Qadr...

I dare to guarantee that your workout, your drills for your game of basketball will take you to a higher level.

You have to.....

WORK + DU'A + TAWAKAL = DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED BASKETBALL PLAYER.

But don't just ask that and make it your priority.

Make it as something extra to ask from Allah during this last ten nights of Ramadan.

We still have time for that.

Let's Rebound and go for some fastbreak for Lailatul Qadr...

~ Salam Al-Qadr from me

(^o^)v

TOO LATE FOR TEARS~

Death knocked on

a bedroom door.
“Who is there?”
the sleeping one cried.
“I’m Angel Izrael, let me inside.”
At once, the man began to shiver
as one sweating in deadly fever.
He shouted to his wife,
“Don’t let the angel take my life.”
“O Angel of Death,
I’m not ready yet.
My family, on me depend,
give me a chance
to go back and mend.”
The angel knocked again.
“O man,
it’s your soul that I require,
I come not with my own desire.”
Bewildered, the men began to cry:
“O Angel, I’m so afraid to die.”
“Let me remain here as your slave,
don’t send me to the grave.”
“Let me in, O man,”the Angel said.
“Open the door,
get up from ur bed,
you can’t stop me from coming in,
Angels can go through objects,
thick and thin.
The men held a gun in his right hand,
ready to defy the Angel’s stand.
“I’ll point my gun towards your head
You dare come in – I’ll shoot you dead.
By now, the Angel was in the room,
Saying, “O man, prepare for your doom,
Foolish man – Angels never die,
put down your gun and do not sigh.
Why are you afraid – Tell me O man –
to die according to Allah’s plan?”
“O Angel, I bow my head in shame,
I had no time to remember Allah’s name.
From dawn till dusk, I made my wealth,
not even caring for my spiritual health.
Allah’s command I never obeyed,
nor five times a day I ever prayed.
A Ramadan came and
a Ramadan went,
but no time had i to repent.
The Hajj was already obligatory upon me,
but I would not part with my money.
All charities I did ignore,
taking usury more and more.
Sometimes I sipped my favourite wine,
with flirting women I set to dine.
O Angel I appeal to you,
spare my life for a year ok .
The Laws of of the qur’an, I will obey,
I’ll begin Salat – this very day.
My fast and hajj will complete
and keep away from self – conceit.
I will refrain from usury
and give all my wealth to charity
Wine and unlawful women,
I will detest,
Allah’s oneness I will attest.”
“We angels do what Allah demands,
we cannot go against His commands,
Death is ordained for everyone –
father, mother, daughter and son
I’m afraid, this moment is your last,
Now be reminded of your past.
I do understand your fears
but it is now too late for tears.
You lived in this world,
two score or more.
Your parents you did not obey,
hungry beggars you turned away.
Your two ill-mannered, female offspring,
in nightclubs, for livelihood they sing.
Instead of making more Muslims,
you made your children non-Muslims.
You ignored the Adhan
nor did you recite the Holy Qur’an.
Breaking promises all your life,
backbiting friends and causing strife.
From hoarded goods,
great profits you made,
and your poor workers –
you underpaid.
Horses and cards were your leisure,
money – making was your pleasure.
You ate and ate
and grew more fat,
with the very sick, you never sat.
A little donation, you never gave
that could a little baby save.
You thought
You’re clever and strong,
but O man,
you’ve done enough wrong.
Paradise for you? I cannot tell,
the disbeliever will dwell in hell.
There is no time for you to repent,
I’ll take your soul for which I am sent.”

P/S = Not of my genuine work. Let's make this Ramadan as our benchmark to prepare ourselves for the actual journey in the hereafter. がんばりましょう (Let's do our best!)
